It’s believed that it was domesticated in china around a thousand years ago, and today there is a very large variety of them available.

It took many years for the goldfish to produce the many breeds that are around today. Some of them don’t even resemble the "golden" color of the original fish that was domesticated. Its amazing the different forms, sizes, and color, fin and eye configurations they come in. BBC registered a goldfish in the Netherlands that was nineteen inches in 2008.
